Today I started in Spring Branch and rode about 26 miles through the Hill Country to New Braunfels where things finally started to get a little flatter.
Today it was very hot and hard to stay cool, I was drinking a lot of water and Gatorade and even ate some ice cream to help stay cool! At one of my rest stops I met a man named David. He also is a cyclist like me (a cyclist is a person who likes to ride bicycles). He gets on the internet and reads the stories of other people who are traveling far and wide on their bicycles. He told me about a friend of his who is starting a bicycle trip in England and is planning on riding all the way to Turkey. That’s a pretty long trip, maybe longer than what I’m doing! Here is a picture I took with David:

Here are some other pictures today. The clouds were fluffy and beautiful. We call those kinds of clouds cumulus clouds. I also saw a lot of yellow flowers growing close to the road. You might see a few of them if you zoom in close on the pictures. I am staying in the town of Kenedy. It’s pronounced like the name Kennedy, it’s just spelled a little different! A lot of people here work on the oil fields. They take oil from the ground and help to change it so that people can use it. Oil is used for a lot of things. It’s used to make gasoline that makes car engines go, to make motor oil that keeps car engines from breaking, and it’s also used to make anything that’s plastic—plastic toys, plastic bags, even this plastic Bluetooth keyboard I’m typing this on! If you zoom into this picture, you can see an oil pump that helps get oil from the ground!

Look at this picture. It is a road sign. It tells you how many MILES some different cities are. What letters do you know from the sign? What numbers? With the help from the grown-up who is reading this blog to you, see if you can decipher (or figure out) what the sign says!
I think the hayfields are cool. There are a lot of hotels here, too, so that all of the workers have a place to stay. I am sleeping in my tent tonight but it feels like it will be cool enough to sleep well! I’m excited because tomorrow I’m visiting my friends the Powell family. I’ve not seen them in 11 years! Enjoy the pictures!
