Day 33(10) Pictures: Dunnellon to Flagler Beach, FL (Ride Across the Southern US Complete on 6/19/2026

For those who might be new to this blog, I am a preschool teacher riding my bicycle across America and blogging for young children as I go. The purpose of this ride is to raise money for Ryves Youth Center in Terre Haute, IN

If you'd like to donate to Ryves Youth Center in Terre Haute, which is the cause for which I've dedicated this ride, you can donate here (all donations go to Ryves Youth Center; I receive nothing): Ride Across America

Today I started riding just before 2:30 in the morning towards Flagler Beach, going through the city of Dunnellon and then crossing Florida on the big road called Highway 40. There was a special forest called the Ocala National Forest. A National Forest is a forest that the that the government (the bosses of our country) keep safe so that people aren’t allowed to mess with the trees and animals for the most part. After 8 or 9 hours of riding, I finally got to Flagler Beach. Thanks to Terry and Deb for talking to me at the beach. Also thank you to my waiter (I didn’t get her name) who gave me some very good food and was very kind at Tortuga’s, the restaurant where I had lunch. Finally, I would like to thank Gordon who lives near Flagler Beach and is part of the Warm Showers group, who has kindly allowed me to stay at his home this evening so I could have a shower and a cool place to sleep.

Did you know that sometimes things don’t always go nicely on my trip? Today after I got to Gordon’s house, which is where I’m sleeping tonight, I got a flat tire that I had to fix! There was a little piece of wire through one of my tubes, so I put a new tube in the tire and put air in it with my pump. It’s fixed and is holding air so I should be able to ride tomorrow!

Ride Across the Southern United STates is over, but I’ll have a few more days of riding. Tomorrow I’m riding to Lake City in Florida to visit some family, and on Monday I’ll be riding to Jacksonville to pick up a rental car to drive back to my cousin’s house in Texas (where my car is). A rental car is when you give a company a little bit of money to use their car for a few days to go somewhere, then you have to give the car back.

Check out my other post from today for some cool videos from Flagler beach that you might like. I will explain some of these pictures for you:

This is some swampy-looking land that I saw along the way:

This was the big bridge crossing over into Flagler Beach where I finally got to the Atlantic Ocean:

Cherry Chicken at the Atlantic Ocean! She finally made it!

Me at the Atlantic Ocean:

My bike at the Atlantic Ocean:

Another picture of my bike at the Atlantic:

My odometer reset accidentally on the way, so it doesn’t say the right number of miles for the trip. I’ll try to add all the numbers and tell y’all what they were in the next few days:

Some pictures of the ocean. If you zoom, you can see some birds:

Can you see the tracks my bike made going out to the ocean. Why are there two sets of tracks, when I only have one bicycle?

These birds were eating something at the ocean. What do you think they were eating?

This was Tortuga’s, the restaurant near the beach where I had lunch. I ate fish tacos, French Fries, and rice.

My bike at the beach, again:

A swampy/river area:

The Welcome to Flagler Beach sign. What letters do you see?

What numbers do you see? The state drawn on it is Florida; what highway number is it?

Zoom in: There are words to tell the city, and numbers to tell how many miles away it was.

I thought these fields were beautiful:

These next few pictures were at the Ocala National Forest on Florida Highway 40:

What letters do you see on this sign? Did you know that U and the S just mean “US” or “United States.” That is the great big country that we live in, the one that I just finished riding across!

This says “Wildlife Crossing.” That means animals cross the highway here. Whenever they cross, a computer or sensor makes the lights start flashing so cars will know to slow down:

These pictures are blurry. That means they don’t look very clear (you can’t really read the numbers). What do you see? What do you think those green lights are?

At the beginning of the day I had around this many miles on my bicycle for this trip. Then I went 110 more miles to get to Flagler Beach.
