Day 28(5): Collins, MS to Grove Hill, AL (6/13/2026)

Today I started out very early (2 o’clock in the morning) to beat the heat, with plenty of lights shining on my bicycle to keep me safe. I met a man named Eric who was walking down the road. I was really worried about him walking down the highway because the cars couldn’t see him well, so I gave him one of my bright orange reflective shirts and some Gatorade and helped him charge his phone. Then I had to keep going.

I crossed over into Alabama (state line pictures are below) and am now in “timber country.” That means that this is a part of the country where people cut down trees to use for different things, like boards for building houses and other buildings, or making paper. I saw quite a few semi trucks that were hauling great big logs that people had cut down. When people cut down big trees like that, it’s important that they also plant new ones so that people in the future will have new trees to make new boards and paper with I got to town early, about 11:30am, so that I could get here before it got too hot!

I am in the city of Grove Hill, Alabama. It’s named well because the city is on top of a big hill that I had to pedal up! In fact, the area in the last 10-20 miles before I got here was quite hilly! It’s harder to pedal my bike up those hills. Have you ever tried running or riding a bicycle or tricycle up a hill? How did you do it?

You can read more about the history of the city in some of the signs in the pictures below. I hope you enjoy them!

This is an area where it looks like they’ve been cutting down trees to make wooden boards and other things.
