Day 10: Columbus, NM to El Paso, TX

Last night I camped out behind the house of Francine near Columbus, New Mexico. Francine is part of the Warm Showers team. These are a group of people who want to help bicycle riders who are traveling and give them a place to stay. So I wanted to say “thank you” to Francine and to everyone else who helps people out on their journeys!

This morning I got my start very early. From Columbus I could see the beautiful city of Puerto Palomas just a few miles away in Mexico. The people in Mexico live in a different country than we do, but they are people just like us and have the same loves and the same dreams as we do here in the United States. Many of them come to the United States so that they can have a better life for them and their children.

I rode through a lot more desert and finally made it to the city of El Paso, which is in Texas. There was no official “Welcome to Texas” sign, so Cherry and I made our own. We have left New Mexico and are in Texas, where we will be for many days!

We also crossed the Rio Grande river. Rio Grande means “Big River” in Spanish, but it’s not very big right here because we’re higher up in the mountains. As it flows farther down southeast down through the border between Texas and Mexico, it collects a lot more water from the other mountain streams and gets a lot bigger!

El Paso is a beautiful city that has mountains right next to it. The mountains loom over the city; that means they are big and close, and you can see them from everywhere in town!

When we were farther out they looked smaller….

But when we got closer, they looked bigger!

Why do you think they look bigger the closer you get. Are the mountains growing? Well, it looks like they’re growing, but they’re not. Just like if you hold your little finger as far as you can from your face, it looks small, but the closer it gets to your face, the bigger it looks; it looks huge if you put it right next to your eye!

A nice man named Johnny who owns a camp for RVs (which are like little houses on wheels that people can camp in) said that I could camp on his property tonight, so I’m headed there later to set up my tent and try to sleep. I’ll try to share some pictures of my tent soon; I know some of you may wonder what it looks like. Tomorrow I’m headed to my next campsite in Sierra Blanca, Texas! I hope you enjoy some more of the pictures I took below.
