Day 8: Globe, AZ to Duncan, AZ (just past Duncan to New Mexico State line) 6/10/2025

Today is my last full day riding in Arizona. I started out riding in the dark just after 3 o’clock in the morning and went through the Apache Indian Reservation. This is the 2nd Indian Reservation I’ve been in since getting to Arizona, the first being the Colorado River Indian Tribes this last Friday near Parker. As I said before, the Indians (or Native Americans) were the people who lived in the land we call America a long time ago,  before the travelers from Europe got here. Here is a picture of a store on the Apache Reservation in the town of Bylas where I bought some food this morning, and the sign on leaving the reservation. I noticed a lot of houses on the reservation had basketball hoops in their yard. Do you like to play basketball?

On or near the Apache reservation I also saw the last saguaro cactuses of the trip. Here you can see them silhouetted on the hill with the bright sky behind them.

. Arizona is the only state in our country which has large numbers of saguaro cactuses growing naturally.

It was about 70 miles to get to the city of Safford. I got there in the late morning, ate some food, then continued about 42 more miles into Duncan. It was very hot coming into Duncan and I drank a lot of water and took breaks to stay cool. I had to climb a lot of hills which was very hard work, but then the last 9 miles or so was downhill and I think I was able to see the city of Duncan way far away. There are more trees and bushes out here in the this part of the desert. I had to repair a flat tire today from a piece of wire in my tire. That’s three flats I’ve had so far, all while in Arizona. Two were from wire and one was from a thorn. I’m headed to Columbus, New Mexico tomorrow, I’ll talk to you then!
