Have you ever played with blocks or boards and used them as ramps for a toy car or ball? When you make a ramp, the top of the ramp it higher than the bottom, like this:

(Image borrowed from Wikipedia)

What happens when you let go of a toy car or ball on the top of the ramp? Yes, it rolls down. What happens when you just hold it at the bottom of the ramp? Can it go up the ramp by itself? No, it takes WORK to get it up the ramp. You have to either push it up the ramp or lift it and put it at the top.

Hills and mountains are a lot like ramps. Today I had to WORK hard to pedal my bicycle from 4000 feet high up to 6000 feet high. That means I climbed up 2000 feet going up the mountain, which is a lot. Then over a long time I got to go down the mountain. Which part do you think was easier? Yes, it was much easier to go DOWN. You’ll see some pictures of the mountains that were around me when you scroll down to look at the pictures.

Today I started very early in the morning and took Sunrise Highway 1 towards the city of Julian. From Julian I took California Highway 78 down some beautiful mountain passes and got to see a lot of beautiful desert scenery. The desert here is sandy and there were lots of cactuses and other short, spiky plants along the way. In this desert (as in most deserts) there aren’t a lot trees, and the trees that do exist aren’t very tall.

Check out these pictures of the side of the mountain. What letters do you see? Do you have any friends whose names start with those letters? What words start with those letters?

You might have seen the sign on the back of my bicycle. It links to this blog site—I’m hoping people will read this and will give money to Ryves Youth Center, which is a wonderful place in the city of Terre Haute where kids can go after school and get free food and help with their homework. You might also see two pieces of artwork on the sign. Two students in my classroom drew the artwork. If you were in my classroom, you might know who drew them. Who do you think it was? Well, I can’t say who it was, because I don’t have their parents’ permission to share it on the internet. But you can probably guess which stuffed animal they drew on the right side picture, if you were in my class. That’s right, it’s Cherry Chicken!

I took this picture this morning before sunrise. It looks like a star, but it’s not. It’s a planet that rises in the eastern sky this time of year before the sun rises. It’s the closest planet to us and the second planet from the sun. It is very bright because it’s close to us and because the sun reflects off the clouds that hang over the planet. It’s also the hottest planet. Do you know what planet it is?

Venus! Your parents can tell you if it’s OK to get up early one morning and go out with them to see it. It’s a beautiful sight, but you do have to get up early!

I made it to Brawley, California today. I’ll be camping out east of town and heading out early in the morning. I try to leave around 2 o’clock in the morning because by noon it’s very hot—too hot to really ride a bicycle much farther. Remember, I have lots of lights and a reflective shirt so that cars can see me and I say safe. It’s not safe for kids to ride at night—your parents can tell you when and where it’s safe to ride.

I hope you all are having a great summer so far! If you have any questions about my bike, my trip, or anything else, you can have your parents email me at jack D0T dispennett At gma1L d0t c0m

Please enjoy these pictures and let me know if you have any questions about them!
